I thought now would be a great time to remind you that 88% of all new years resolutions FAIL! Feel better? Not yet? Check this out.... Research shows that the part of the brain that is responsible for will power works just like a muscle.
The good news is that with the proper "exercises" you can make it stronger. More importantly, if you over train it you will most certainly hit a plateau and eventually weaken it. As with any new exercise routine it is best to ease into it...not something many of us are very good at at all. Don't worry I have included myself in this side eye!
In The Motivation Manifesto, Brendon Bourchard (a super cool smarty pants) suggests micro denials at first. Instead of stating I will never drink soda (insert anything delicious) ever ever again, try, I will go one day without a soda this week. Everyone can stick to anything for one day. To set yourself up for success ( cause who doesn't want that?!)
Try the 1 day test.
- Pick a habit that you wish to change, ie. eating too much sugar...
- Determine the smallest possible action you can take towards a new healthy habit ie, not having (insert snack you wish to eat less of) and commit to it....for 1 day
- The smaller the task, the less stress you will be under, the easier it will be to avoid the temptation and to feel like you failed (all 88 % of us). Like any athlete (back to the exercise analogy we go) the more you practice, the easier the exercise becomes, the more wins you have, the more confident you get
and the more you want to win again! That adds up to a lot of wins!!
Let me know what you think!
